Jean-François Chanet

Chercheur permanent

University professor; researcher at the Center for History at Sciences Po

Former student of the Ecole normale supérieure de la rue d’Ulm, former pensioner of the Thiers Foundation, Jean-François Chanet is a professor of history and tenured chair of nineteenth-century history at Sciences Po.

He was a junior member of the University Institute of France (promotion 1999).

He has studied successively how the reorganised school and army after the defeat of 1870-1871 contributed to the double process of French republicanisation and the nationalisation of the masses. As historian of education, he is interested in the feminisation of the primary teaching body and in the manner in which the States defined and regulated the liberty of teaching in Western Europe in the nineteenth century. The social history of military acts and the armies’ place in national mythology constitute the other tenet of his research. Member of the scientific council of the Mission of the Centenary of the First World War, he is particularly interested in the social and cultural effects of the memory of the 1870-1871 war during the interwar period from 1871 to 1914. He also prepares with Emmanuel Saint-Fuscien a book on schooling and the war and presents with him this subject for a seminar at the EHESS.

He wishes to eventually participate in restoring the history of republicanisms of the nineteenth century, notably through Jean Jaurès’ works on the conservative Republic of the years 1870s and the relations between republicanism and socialism.
Jean-François Chanet is the director of the review The Social Movement (known as Le mouvement social). He is also a member of the editorial board of the reviews History of Education (Histoire de l'éducation), and Jean Jaurès: Quarterly Notebooks (Jean Jaurès. Cahiers trimestriels).

Jean-François Chanet is co-responsible for the series “War and Society” in the History collection by Rennes University Presses (PUR). He is member of the editorial board of the reviews,  Histoire de l'éducation, Le mouvement social, Jean Jaurès. Cahiers trimestriels et Vingtième siècle. Revue d'histoire.
