Reconstructions, 1918-1939: France and Britain in a European Perspective

This Franco-British project proposes to establish an international network of historians of the inter-war years. This undertaking aims to lay the foundation for a long-term collaborative project that would enable historians of France and Britain to renew the study of both countries in the inter-bellum period.

Convinced of the necessity and value of a truly comparative and interdisciplinary approach, the project will firmly locate the experience of France and Britain between the end of the Great War and the outbreak of the Second World War into its European and international context.

Its focus on the transition from war to peace will lead the team to build on recent studies of cultural and political demobilizations after WWI to combine the history of "sorties de guerre" with a renewed approach to the reconstruction of former belligerent nations.
